Checklist for Moving
BEFORE YOU LEAVE: Give address change to - Post office
- Charge accounts and credit cards
- Friends and relatives
Bank - Transfer funds and arrange check-cashing in new city
- Arrange credit references
Insurance - Notify company of new location for coverage: Life, Health, Fire, and Auto
Utility companies - Gas, water, telephone, and power company
Medical, Dental, and Prescription Histories - Ask doctor and dentist for referrals
- Charge accounts and credit cards
- Transfer needed prescriptions
And don't forget to - Leave old keys needed by new tenant or owner with realtor or attorney
- Empty freezer
- Defrost freezer and clean refrigerator
- Clean carpeting and rugs
- Arrange to have items wrapped for moving
On moving day - Carry enough cash or travelers checks to cover cost of moving services
- Carry documents, jewelry, and other valuables yourself.
At your new address - Check on service or telephone, gas, electricity, and water
- Check pilot light on stove, water heater, and furnace
- Have new address recorded on driver's license
- Register car within 5 days
- Apply for state driver's license
- Register children in school
- Arrange for medical services such as doctor, dentist, etc.
